Turn Evidence into Action

Lead Change with Confidence

Improve Care That Lasts

Why is it still so hard to turn research into real improvement?

Across healthcare, new research, ideas, and innovations emerge every day.

But what happens next is often less certain.

  • Projects start strong, but progress stalls.
  • Evidence exists, yet practice stays the same.
  • Systems remain fragmented, and results are inconsistent.

Despite best intentions, health professionals find themselves asking —
why doesn’t evidence translate into real, lasting improvement?

The truth is, knowing what works isn’t the same as making it work.

There’s a persistent gap between research and reality

and closing it is the key to better care, stronger teams, and meaningful change.

When evidence isn’t implemented effectively

Patients
miss out
on better care

Teams
lose
momentum

Organisations waste valuable time and resources

And when improvements are not realised, there is often frustration.
A clear pathway is required to generate the important changes.

A pathway for clinicians, researchers, and leaders who want to make a difference.

From Research to Reality is a practical implementation guide to systematically integrate research evidence and innovation into practice.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Clear explanations of implementation and behaviour science, written for busy health professionals
  • A simple framework that guides you through a sequence of four key actions
  • Practical case scenarios that highlight tensions and paradoxes in navigating complex healthcare settings
  •  Templates you can apply immediately in your own setting

Whether you’re starting a new improvement project or refining an existing one, this guide provides both structure and flexibility to suit your setting.

Each chapter builds on the last, creating a step-by-step roadmap for lasting change.

From Research to Reality bridges the gap between what we know and what we do.

It brings together insights from psychology, management, and health sciences to show how behaviour, systems, and strategy interact in successful implementation.

By following this framework, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify meaningful improvement opportunities.
  • Engage and align your team around shared goals.
  • Evaluate readiness and measure progress.
  • Co-design strategies and sustain improvement.

This guide transforms evidence into measurable change.

As you follow this framework, you’ll be able to:

  • Translate research and innovation into consistent, real-world results
  • Lead evidence-based change with confidence
  • Improve care for patients and staff
  • Build systems that support lasting improvement

This happens when you lead the way.

The book is organised into 10 chapters, aligned with the 4-step Guiding Framework for Improvement:

Hello, I'm Sharon

I have had a dynamic career spanning clinical practice, healthcare leadership, academic teaching and research. I began working as an occupational therapist and progressed into middle and senior management roles in healthcare organisations across Australia and England. Mid-career, I shifted focus to complete a PhD on effective teamwork in healthcare, which led to a complementary academic path. Since then, I have led postgraduate programs across four universities, including the University of Oxford.

Now, working independently as a consultant, I support health professionals to navigate complexity, plan implementation, and lead innovation across different healthcare settings.

I wrote this book to bring together the research insights, educational strategies, and practical experiences I’ve accumulated across these different roles. Too often, I have observed clinicians and those who support them face a frustrating mix of trial-and-error change efforts while trying to make sense of overwhelming evidence. I’ve seen time and energy wasted from a lack of knowledge, structure and support. This book offers a systematic, evidence-informed sequence of strategies designed to help busy clinicians, and the researchers and innovators who work with them, to plan and implement change more effectively.

Healthcare continues to evolve — but evidence only makes a difference when it’s implemented effectively.

Amid increasing demand, limited resources, and growing complexity, implementation science has never been more essential.

From Research to Reality provides a proven approach for applying evidence to practice and helping professionals lead change with confidence and clarity.

Now is the time to bridge the gap between knowing and doing.
